February Announcement: In the Flat Field

Hello again friends,

We’re halfway through February already and it’s time for another update as I have some exciting news.

I am very pleased to share that I have begun a collaboration with my good friend Nuno Rodrigues de Sousa and we have an exhibition planned for August 2024: ‘In the Flat Field’ at Chrissie Cotter gallery, Camperdown NSW.

‘In the Flat Field’ is a transdisciplinary collaboration that creatively engages with science-fiction novel Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A. Abbott—a Menippean satire set in a two-dimensional world populated by geometric figures. In this exhibition the artists will employ hybrid art forms, such as embroidered canvases, animated paintings, textiles on canvas stretchers, and live performance.

Drawing from Flatland’s exploration of multiple dimensions and recent scholarship on the connections between Modern art and contemporaneous developments in the fields of science and mathematics, including x-rays and the fourth dimension, the artists will explore speculative links between Flatland, science fiction, and Modern art. We will also engage with Flatland’s social commentary, touching on issues such as feminism, eugenics, and class struggle, as well as the method of socio-political critique through creative work.

Nuno and I went on a site visit to Chrissie Cotter recently, to begin thinking about the layout of the exhibition. While Nuno took photographs of the space, I took photographs of Nuno:

It’s also worth mentioning that this collaboration playfully engages with Nuno’s existing explorations of Flatland and Malevich in Essay on a Flatland and Essay on a Flatland #2:

I will have more details about the exhibition closer to the date, including the date and time of the opening, and details of our comprehensive public program, including educational and creative workshops for all ages, timed to coincide with National Science Week.
